A workplace is a group of people who have agreed to produce something together, in exchange for pay. Almost every rule you will meet exists to make that cooperation predictable.
Who is who
- Your manager assigns and prioritises your work, and is accountable for it.
- Colleagues depend on your output being on time and in the agreed shape.
- Clients or customers pay for the result — they judge the organisation by you.
- HR / People teams handle contracts, pay, leave and conduct concerns.
What you are really paid for
Not hours in a chair. You are paid for reliable results and for making your manager's job easier: clear updates, no surprises, problems raised early.
If you are ever unsure what is expected, asking is professional. Guessing silently and getting it wrong is not.
